Save This Film Location

Historic Fire Station No.23 will be closed forever to shooting in a matter of months unless we act now. If Corporation for History Art and Culture’s (CHAC) plan for a cultural center in the Toy District is adopted by the City of Los Angeles, this great location will remain available for shooting well into the future. Old 23’s, is known for films such as “Ghostbusters”, “Set it Off” and “The Mask” as well as commercials, TV, videos and other projects.

All that stands in the way of the continued use of the location by the film community is a mere $2.3mil in money, production equipment, building supplies expertise etc.
Why you may ask is $2.3mil needed for the continued use of Old 23’s as a film location? In 2009 the City of Los Angeles declared the building surplus property. They then began actively looking to begin restoration and deciding on a use for it.

Prop K is a City mandated use requirement for the building, passed by the voters in 1995. It was a proposition allocating funds to convert available real estate into facilities benefitting Los Angeles Youth. Any properties affected by Prop K must have at least 40% of its use for youth activities. If professional use of the property is also part of the project, matching private donations equal to the Prop K funds (in this case $2.3mil) is required.

CHAC is a non-profit corporation serving the community since 2003. The CHAC Cultural Center Project for Old 23’s is the only proposal that has as a fundamental component youth education and professional use of the property as a film location video and audio production facility.

CHAC was started in 2003 by the caretaker of Old 23’s Daniel Taylor, as a way to use this Historic Fire Station in the community interest. The professional use of the facility funds the community mission and allows creativity without limits for the Downtown Community.

What: Shoot here. Locate any equipment, building supplies, expertise in arts or construction that can be donated. Let anyone interested in keeping film production in Los Angeles know that the CHAC Cultural Center Project needs their support.
Do you have equipment, expertise, funds etc. the value of which will contribute to our 2.3 million dollar goal?
Will you do one or more of these. Donate, sign our online petition, spread the word, write a letter of support and send it to us to help CHAC keep filming in Los Angeles?

PLEASE, Learn more about the project and watch the video on our web site@
